Tip Calculator FAQ, Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do the Total, Tip $, and Each values change as I’m
entering the Bill?
A: The Tip Calculator is always updating so you get your answer as quickly
as possible. That means you don’t need to press any extra keys to
see how much you need to pay.
Q: How do I enter in dollars and cents since there is no ‘.’ button
on the phone?
A: The Tip Calculator will always keep the last two digits as cents, so
you don’t need to enter in a ‘.’ to separate the dollars
and cents. For example, if you wanted to enter $34.27, you would simply
press 3-4-2-7.
Q: Can the Tip Calculator remember the Tip % that I like to pay?
A: Yes, the Tip Calculator remembers the last values that you used, so the
next time you run the application, the Tip % will start at the last value
you used.
Q: How do I round the amount each person pays to the nearest dollar?
A: Move the highlight to the “Each” field and press left or
right. Each time you press right you will increase the amount by a quarter
($0.25), rounding to the nearest $0.25. Each time you press left you will
decrease the amount by a quarter, rounding to the nearest $0.25. You can
also round the Bill, Tip $, Total, and Each fields.
Q: Why does the Tip % change when I change the Tip $, Total, or Each fields?
A: The Tip % is recalculated as you change the Tip $, Total, or Each fields
so that you can always see what Tip % you are approximately paying. This
makes it easy to make sure you are paying an appropriate tip.
Q: How do I review the last total?
A: The Tip Calculator automatically remembers the last calculation and starts
up from the point you left off. Just start up the application again and
you’ll see the last values.
Q: Is there a way to split the bill based on how much each person ordered?
A: To keep things simple and easy to use, the Tip Calculator splits the
bill up evenly. You can use this as an estimate for how much each person
should pay, and then just make sure the Total adds up after everyone pays.
Q: Should I enter the bill before tax or after tax?
A: The Tip Calculator calculates the tip after tax, which makes it easier
for you to use since you don’t have to enter in the tax separately.
That means you should enter the Bill after the tax is added in. This is
what appears on the first line of a credit card slip.
Q: Can I calculate the tip before tax?
A: In order to keep the Tip Calculator easy to use, there is no field to
enter in the tax. This means that the tips are calculated after tax. If
you really want to calculate a tip before tax, you can just add the local
sales tax % to the Tip %. For example, if the sales tax is 5% and you
want to leave a 17% tip, you would put 22% in the Tip % field and leave
the tax out of the Bill.
