Spelling Helper FAQ, Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Which is the correct spelling: “r e c i e v e” or “r e c e i v e”?
A: You can use “Find New Word” to answer this question. “Find New Word” will show you a list of all the words in the word list, along with a text entry at the top so its easy to find the word you want.

  • Select “Find New Word” from the main menu.
  • You will be shown some simple instructions that tell you what some of the buttons do in this mode.
  • Since you know that is starts with “r e c”, lets type in those letters.
  • Press 7-7-7 to enter an ‘r’. You press the 7 key three times because ‘r’ is the third letter on the key. You will see ‘r’ in the text entry and the word list now shows words that start with ‘r’.
  • Press 3-3 to enter an ‘e’. You will see ‘re’ in the text entry and the word list now shows words that start with ‘re’.
  • Press 2-2-2 to enter a ‘c’. You will see ‘rec’ in the text entry and the word list now shows words that start with ‘rec’.
  • Now you aren’t sure if its and ‘ie’ or ‘ei’ that comes next. Lets try the ‘ie’.
  • Press 4-4-4 to enter an ‘i’. You will see ‘reci’ in the text entry and the word list now shows words that start with ‘reci’.
  • Press 3-3 to enter an ‘e’. You will see ‘recie’ in the text entry. Notice that the cursor under the ‘e’ and the box around the text entry is drawn in red. Also, there are no words displayed in the word list that start with ‘recie’ This tells you that “recieve” can’t be the right spelling.
  • Try to enter a ‘v’ by pressing 8-8-8. Notice that the red ‘e’ is replaced with a red ‘v’. It won’t let you type ‘reciev’ because that doesn’t spell a word.
  • Erase the last two letters by pressing CLR/BACK twice. You will see ‘rec’ in the text entry and the word list will now show words that start with ‘rec’.
  • Press 3-3 to enter an ‘e’. You will see ‘rece’ in the text entry and the word list now shows words that start with ‘rece’.
  • Press 4-4-4 to enter an ‘i’. You will see ‘recei’ in the text entry and the words list now shows words that start with ‘recei’.
  • Look down the words list, and you’ll notice that “receive” is in the list.
  • That’s it! You’ve found the correct spelling.

Q: How do I get out of “Find New Word” or “Find Last Word”? Pressing CLR/BACK just erases the last character in the word!
A: You can get out of this mode by pressing SELECT/OK. Also, you can press CLR/BACK when the text entry is empty. If you want to quit the application entirely, you can press END.

Q: What is the difference between “Find New Word” and “Find Last Word”?
A: The two modes are almost the same with a small difference. “Find New Word” will show you some simple instructions and start the word finder with an empty text entry. “Find Last Word” will start the word finder with the last word you entered or the last word you highlighted in View Quick List mode.

Q: Why is “Find Last Word” grayed out? Why can’t I select it?
A: You can’t select “Find Last Word” if you haven’t found a word or looked at your quick list since you started the application. Just use “Find New Word.” “Find Last Word” is a shortcut that helps you return to the word list once you’ve used it during this use of the application.

Q: What is a Quick List?
A: The Quick List is a list of words that you misspell often or want to study. You can push the * button when finding a word to add it to the quick list. A * will appear next to the word. If there already is a * next to the word and you push *, it will remove it from the quick list. You can look at your quick list by selected “View Quick List” from the main menu. You can take a practice quiz of your Quick List words by selecting “Spelling Quiz” and then selecting “Quiz Quick List”.

Q: I’m never sure of the correct spelling of “separate,” “receive,” and “definitely.” How can I quickly get the correct spelling of those words?
A: That’s exactly what the Quick List is for! Find these words using “Find New Word”. Note that you don’t have to type in the whole word: you can type in the first few letters and push DOWN until the word is highlighted at the top of the list. Press * to add the highlighted word to your Quick List. Now, from the main menu, select “View Quick List” and the words you marked with a * will be displayed. If you have more words than can fit on the display, you can scroll through them using the arrow buttons.

Q: How do I practice the spelling of many different words?
A: You can take a spelling quiz. Select “Spelling Quiz” from the main menu. Then select “Quiz Random Words” from the Spelling Quiz menu. This will pick ten words from the entire word list and then give you a spelling quiz with these words. You will be shown a few different misspellings of each word along with the correct spelling. Select the correct spelling from the list. If you get the question wrong, you can try again. After answering all the questions, you will be shown your results and a list of all the words you got right and wrong.

Q: How can I study the words I missed on a spelling quiz?
A: From the quiz results screen, push *. This will add any words that you missed to your Quick List. You can review these words by selecting “View Quick List” from the main menu. Or, you can take a quiz using words from your Quick List by selecting “Spelling Quiz” and then “Quiz Quick List”.

Q: What does the red text cursor mean when I’m searching for a word?
A: The red cursor under a letter (and the red box around the text entry) tells you that the letter doesn’t belong in any word in the dictionary. For example, if you try to spell “separate” as “s e p e r a t e” then you’ll only be able to enter “sepe” and the second ‘e’ will be drawn in red. At this point, you can only replace the ‘e’ with another letter (press one of the buttons with a letter on it) or delete it (press CLR/BACK or LEFT).

Q: What does the * next to some words mean?
A: Words that are in your quick list are drawn with a * next to them. You can add a star to a word in the Find Word modes by pressing the * key. This will add it to your Quick List. You can also remove the * and the word from your Quick List by pressing the * star key when the word is highlighted in Find Word mode or View Quick List mode.

Q: How are the words misspelled in the spelling quizzes?
A: The application has over 110 misspelling rules designed to test the hardest aspects of the English language. When many rules apply to a word, a few of these rules will be selected at random and a quiz question will be created. Each time you test the word, different rules may be selected, so each quiz question will be new and different.

Q: My word is so long that it doesn’t fit on the screen. How do I see the whole word?
Words that are too long to fit on the display, such as “electroencephalographs” will be shown differently, depending on the mode. In the Find Word modes, the leftmost parts of the word will be drawn in the word list and the right most parts will be drawn in the text entry. You can piece together the entire word by viewing the both parts of the display. In Quiz and View Quick List mode, the leftmost part of the word will be shown until the word is highlighted, and then when highlighted the rightmost part of the word will be shown. A hyphen (-) is drawn at the from of the highlighted word so you know its been truncated.

Q: Can I get Spelling Helper to check the spelling of my SMS text message?
A: The Spelling Helper is not able to read your SMS message, so you can’t use it to directly check the spelling of your messages. However, if you aren’t sure of the spelling of a word in your message, you can use the Spelling Helper to check on the correct spelling and then continue editing your message.

Q: I disagree with your spelling of the word “civilization.” Where I come from, we spell it “c i v i l i s a t i o n.” Also, there is a word in my dictionary that isn’t in your word list. What’s going on?
A: The 65,000+ words used in the word list are based on the level 50 American English version of the Spell Checking Oriented Word Lists (SCOWL) developed independently by Kevin Atkinson (http://wordlist.sourceforge.net). This list does not contain every English word, but it does contain those used most often. The Spell Checking Oriented Word Lists is developed with help from Alan Beale, Grady Ward, Brian Kelk, the WordNet team, the ENABLE team, J Ross Beresford, Geoff Kuenning and other unpaid contributors.
